A Little Life follows four college classmates—broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition—as they move to New York in search of fame and fortune. While their relationships, which are tinged by addiction, success, and pride, deepen over the decades, the men are held together by their devotion to the brilliant, enigmatic Jude, a man scarred by an unspeakable childhood trauma. A hymn to brotherly bonds and a masterful depiction of love in the twenty-first century, Hanya Yanagihara’s stunning novel is about the families we are born into, and those that we make for ourselves.

Did not finish. Just trauma after trauma after trauma which felt like the sort of vicarious ‘thrill’ of a rape for no reason.

I went from 2 starts to 4 stars, after reflecting back on this book months later. I still think about this book, 6 months later. The 2 stars were unfair and inappropriate due to the depths of pain this book brought upon me. It was so brutally painful. But it was an incredible book about friendship, trauma and, to me, evil. The trigger warning of child sexual abuse could never have prepared me for this story.

I hated it, then I loved it, then I hated it, and loved it once more. Then I hated it. Then I sobbed.

If you need a reminder as to why we live our lives and what is most important then yes read this book. If you forget that happiness is a privilege, read this book. I will worn you, the beginning is boring, the middle is gut wrenching and the end will make you sob. At times the writing is hard to follow, assume every “-“ or chapter break is either a prospective shift or a time shift. Good luck.

I sat with the ending of this book all day. I feel like I will remember Jude forever. A very long book; a very well written book. I want to hug Harold and never let him go.

Gorgeously and intimately written, a story of betrayal, pain, heartache, and love.
