Description

We have been photographing marine life for many years and take great joy in the intrinsic beauty, intelligence and dignity of these creatures. Sea creatures features the back stories of who, how and when they were described to science. It starts back in the 1700’s with Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy. Our collection of underwater images have become the framework to this book. They traverse the tropics from the Red Sea through to the Kingdom of Tonga and stretch from the temperate waters of Australia's southern coast to the equatorial waters of Sulawesi and Raja Ampat in the Coral Triangle. Some marine mammals from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Arctic Circle have also been roped in. By sea creatures, we mean marine animals but we have excluded fish. They have been given the same treatment in another book - A Short History of the Discovery of Fish. The species described are from the 1700's up to the year 1906. For the scientific authors, it's a collection of vignettes of people of their time, their achievements and sometimes their foibles and prejudices. Where we have been able to glean it, we have included a little trivia that adds to the colour and movement. This book has a chronological running order starting with the year the creature was described to science. The chapters are arranged by scientific author. The book starts in 1758 and cuts out 235 species later in 1905. 1758 was the earliest record and the passage of nearly 150 years seemed a convenient time to stop.
