Uncover the Secrets of Špilberk Castle’s Baroque Casemates
Descend into the dark, winding corridors where history was written. Originally built as a refuge for Špilberk’s garrison in times of siege and a storage space for military supplies, the casemates later became a dreaded prison. Wooden cells, iron shackles, cold, and darkness… a place from which there was no escape. You will also visit the castle moats, the former prison, and an unfinished air-raid shelter from the final days of World War II.
Step into a place where time stands still, and where, for over 140 years, the stories of Špilberk’s most infamous prisoners—such as Franz von Trenck and Václav Babinský—have come to life.
Do you know what the word casemates means and who actually built them at Špilberk? Come and experience it for yourself.
Brno City Museum warmly invites you!
