Description

INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
The 19th mystery in the #1 New York Times-bestselling Armand Gamache series.

Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

That's only the first in a sequence of strange events that begin THE GREY WOLF, the nineteenth novel in Louise Penny's #1 New York Times-bestselling series. A missing coat, an intruder alarm, a note for Gamache reading "this might interest you", a puzzling scrap of paper with a mysterious list—and then a murder. All propel Chief Inspector Gamache and his team toward a terrible realization. Something much more sinister than any one murder or any one case is fast approaching.

Armand Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, his son-in-law and second in command, and Inspector Isabelle Lacoste can only trust each other, as old friends begin to act like enemies, and long-time enemies appear to be friends. Determined to track down the threat before it becomes a reality, their pursuit takes them across Québec and across borders. Their hunt grows increasingly desperate, even frantic, as the enormity of the creature they’re chasing becomes clear. If they fail the devastating consequences would reach into the largest of cities and the smallest of villages.

Including Three Pines.

  • How do we know Cozy unless we are made uncomfortable?

🐺 focuses on real world political ecology in a time when maybe all we want is to escape into a cozy mystery and vicariously enjoy food and fellowship at The Bistro. I am encouraged by the values espoused in the book, such as sacrifice, forgiveness, and the connection of all things. The courage of the characters was what kept me reading as quickly as all the others in the Gamache series and a lot of threads still unwoven at the conclusion. So delighted that more is on its way in The Black Wolf!

Brilliant story telling but more, a warning to us all that disaster lurks. Thank you Ms. penny for hours in a foreign land that I’ve grown so fond of.

Rather tedious and highly improbable. I have read the entire series, but had a hard time getting through this.
  • Too much going on

Too much going on. Too many feminine characteristics lumped on a male character to be believable. This book is all over the place and it took a lot of discipline to finish it. Sorry, no, just no.

Best story yet. Complicated, engaging and extremely intriguing. As a reader, I felt I was participating in the investigation and the final result. So glad the story will be continued in 2025, with “The Black Wolf”. Love anything that continues the story of inhabitants of Three Pines as well. They are such a beautiful community of interesting and loving characters. Thank you Louise Penny for another great book!

Very good book. Always enjoyed the main characters. My only complaint is there were so many new characters I found myself having to back track to reacquaint myself with them. Might be early onset dementia.
