Description

An Instant New York Times Bestseller

Beloved bestselling author Mitch Albom returns with his most important novel to date, an unforgettable story of truth and lies set during the Holocaust.

Eleven-year-old Nico Krispis has never told a lie. When the Nazis invade his home in Salonika, Greece, the trustworthy boy is discovered by a German officer, who offers him a chance to save his family. All Nico has to do is persuade his fellow Jewish residents to board trains heading “north,” where new jobs and safety await. Unaware that this is all a cruel ruse, the innocent boy reassures passengers on the station platform every day.

But when the final train is loaded, Nico sees his family being herded into a boxcar. Only then does he discover that he has helped send them—and everyone he knows and loves—to their doom at Auschwitz.

Nico escapes—but he never tells the truth again.

In The Little Liar, Mitch Albom examines the human repercussions of deception by interweaving the stories of Nico, who yearns for forgiveness; his older brother, Sebastian, who vows revenge against him; Fannie, the girl who must choose between them; and Udo Graf, the Nazi officer who forever changed their lives with his lies.

Through the war years, the concentration camps, and the decades that follow, Albom reveals the consequences of each person’s honesty and dishonesty, bringing them back to where it all started in a staggering climax worthy of the best of Albom’s internationally embraced stories.

Loved how it was told by a fifth POV. It gave an additional insight, and how it was beautifully written. Interesting how even when each character experienced the horrors of Holocaust differently, the characteristics/ personalities of them prior to the Holocaust also related how they viewed and lived the post era of their lives. Like choices change one’s life forever, but their true identity would still prevail.

I am both at a loss for words and could write an essay. I never understood people who described books as ‘couldn’t put it down’ or ‘read it in one go.’ Now I do. I am a WRECK. This story, told from the perspective of Truth, chronicles the lives of three young Greek Jewish children whose lives were forever changed by the expulsion of their people during World War II. Each of them experience the war in different ways, and thus, as decades pass, their experiences dealing and coping (or not) with their traumas just grips your heart and doesn’t let go. Their paths intertwine over their lives as only shared grief and misery can. As I said, I both want to talk all day about it and also tell you to just read it, and read it now. It’s stunningly beautiful in its narrative, poignant storytelling, and the concept of Truth telling the story is perfection, literally right to the final page. I am just so in awe of this book, and it’s now easily in the top three I’ve ever read. 10 out of 10 with absolutely no exaggeration. My eyes are still welling half an hour after finishing. “A lie told once is easy to expose, but a lie told a thousand times can look like the truth.”

He writes in a way that I can read it straight through as I did with The Five People… or pick up and put down as I did this one. Easy to follow his plots and characters
