Description

The first Grant County novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author, Karin Slaughter, introducing Sara Linton of the acclaimed Will Trent Series.

“A bull’s-eye, deftly crafted. . . . Slaughter’s plotting is brilliant, her suspense relentless.” —Washington Post

A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it’s only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer’s twisted work becomes clear.

Sara’s ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation—a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later. But he’s got more than a sadistic serial killer on his hands, because the county’s only female detective, Lena Adams—the first victim’s sister—wants to serve her own justice.

But it is Sara who holds the key to finding the killer. A secret from her past could unmask the brilliantly malevolent psychopath… or mean her death.

Good mystery! I would love a sequel to find out how the character's lives turned out!

This novel is graphic, entrancing, visually terrorizing, and it introduces you to endearing characters that are so flawed they remind you of members of your own family. The words take you on an incredibly horrific journey that has you anticipating the next novel.

While Slaughter's writing style is good and the story moves right along... the plot was ridiculous. The brilliant doctor/coroner who was working very closely with the police... and therefore privy to every detail of the case... was unable to put 2 and 2 together and see that her attack 12 years earlier was the exact same M.O. as the case they were currently working on. So while she's not seeing the connection... a second girl dies. Once the brilliant doctor (dripping with sarcasm) FINALLY tells the police her own story... they solve the crime. The reader sees the connection immediately while the "top of her class" doctor is apparently blindsighted!

This was very depressing and sick. I'm worried about the friend that recommended it to me. Who could enjoy this book?

Not one of Slaughter's better woven story lines. Even dialogue was predictable. No surprises. Gore abounding, repeated incessantly and unnecessarily. If we readers are expected to wade through, the read must be worthy of it. I felt cheated.

A little slow and too explicit for my taste. Felt like I has to shower after I read it.

I'm not sure that I understand how this became an international best seller. It was interesting, an easy read and generally enjoyable. However, it was not overwhelmingly thrilling or mind blowing. It felt like a movie script more than a great work of literature. The characters were caricatures and the dialogue was fairly contrived and relatively predictable. It's definitely a good airplane read but that's about it.
