I will say I was put off by many of the racial stereotypes and comments, yet I will say the book is brilliantly written and beautifully executed in its cosmic horror and its ability to make the reader feel his words
  • A product of his time.

I’m sure there are countless readers able to enjoy Lovecraft’s work but I found myself unable to look past the abundant references to racism which he, perhaps even subconsciously, included in this novella. While I admit to enjoying the poetry of phrase he employs, like most writers of the 1920’s, I found myself unable to become fully immersed in his words as every few pages there seemed to be shoehorned in some form of cliché or criticism revolving around his characters of color. The distastefulness may be a product of the era, but that doesn’t require the modern reader look past them. I won’t pick up another of his books, no matter the length, if it means I’m forced to read more of what I feel is obvious contempt for his non-white characters, and the promotion of racist ideals… no matter the supposed subtly.
