#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • ONE OF TIME'S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME • In this masterpiece of modern American horror that inspired Stanley Kubrick’s classic film, Jack Torrance takes a job as the caretaker of the remote Overlook Hotel. As the brutal winter sets in, the hotel’s dark secrets begin to unravel.

“An undisputed master of suspense and terror.” —The Washington Post

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Only Stephen King could make a 700 pg book interesting and page turning about a family of 3 isolated in a hotel on a mountain top. The Shining is the ultimate King story, with a unique foundation of those who can Shine and what Shining actually means and entails for the King universe moving forward. I just love this story, I loved the movie as well but the book had a MUCH better ending imo. What I didn’t like, were the hedge monsters, I actually thought that was kind of stupid and silly, even in the context of this story. But wow, what an epic dissection on isolation and psychosis, addiction, and more! I’ve read 3 Stephen King books so far, happy to say I’m a huge fan!

I’ve been meaning to read this book for years but never got around to completing it. Finally, I’ve finished the book and I understand more about the Overlook and Danny that felt unanswered in the movie. While the first few parts of the book felt overly descriptive and long, it felt necessary when you get towards the end of the book and everything that makes the characters come full circle. I’ve seen the Doctor Sleep movie but now I plan on reading it. I’ve always been a Stephen King fan and analyzing his writing style is always a pleasure.

Well, the graphic images of the evil Overlook will certainly keep me up at night. But I find myself most saddened by the desperate attempts of a well-meaning father who’s trying to do right by his family. Humans trying to conquer their own demons is more haunting than anything supernatural.
